Liver health

Your liver keeps a written record of how you live.

Alcohol, sugar, medication and stress all pass through the same organ. Seven markers from one at-home blood draw tell you what it has been carrying — and damage caught here is often reversible.

“Normal” is a wider range than you think

Most labs will call an ALT of 35 normal. Those reference ranges came from general populations that included plenty of people with undiagnosed fatty liver. When researchers stripped those people out and asked what a genuinely healthy liver looks like, the numbers came back much lower.

19 U/L

Healthy ALT ceiling, women

30 U/L

Healthy ALT ceiling, men

35 U/L

What your lab still calls normal

So a result of 32 can be simultaneously normal on your printout and worth a closer look. ALT alone does not diagnose anything. What a number like that gives you is a flag, and a baseline.

Quiet, common, and one of the more reversible things in medicine

1 in 3

Adults carry it

Up to a third of adults have fatty liver, alcohol-related or otherwise, without knowing.

No symptoms

Until it is late

Liver tissue has no pain fibres. It gets loud late, which is why most people find out by accident.

3–6 months

To turn it around

Remove the load and the organ repairs. Fatty liver commonly improves substantially inside six months.

What we measure

Seven markers. One blood draw. $151.80 NZD + GST.

Everything you drink passes through here

Your liver processes alcohol and medication, filters toxic chemicals, stores vitamins and minerals, and makes bile, proteins and enzymes. These markers look for damage to the cells themselves and for anything blocking the organ from doing that work.

01

ALT

Alanine aminotransferase

The enzyme that leaks out of liver cells when they are under strain. The most useful early flag for fatty liver.

02

GGT

Gamma-glutamyl transferase

Rises with sustained alcohol intake and falls fast when you stop. Half-life of about two to three weeks.

03

ALP

Alkaline phosphatase

Sits mainly in the liver and bones. Raised levels can point to a blockage in the bile ducts.

04

Bilirubin

Total bilirubin

A waste product the liver clears. When it builds up, the liver is either overloaded or obstructed.

05

Albumin

Serum albumin

Made in the liver, so it shows what your liver is producing rather than what is leaking out of it.

06

Total protein

Plasma proteins

The overall protein load in your blood. Read alongside albumin and globulin rather than on its own.

07

Globulin

Calculated fraction

The immune and transport protein fraction. Shifts here point toward inflammation or chronic liver strain.

How it works

Test, change something, test again

01

Choose the Liver Function Check. No referral, no GP appointment, no waiting room.

02

Draw at home

A collection kit arrives at your door. One small blood sample, sent back in the prepaid pack.

03

Read your numbers

Results land in your dashboard, plotted against optimal ranges rather than just the lab's normal.

04

Retest at 90 days

Change something, then measure it. GGT often moves within a month and ALT follows.

An ALT of 32 today becomes the number you watch drop toward 20. Watching it fall does more for most people’s behaviour than any amount of being told what to do.

Longevity Labs was built alongside Aro Hā, where guests spend a week without alcohol in the Southern Alps and go home with the toolkit. Test before you go, retest ninety days after.

Common questions

Do I need an account before ordering?

No. Choose your test and order as a guest. After ordering, create an account or sign in with the email you used at checkout to link your order and view your results privately.

My last blood test said normal. Why test again?

Standard reference ranges were built from general populations that included plenty of people with undiagnosed fatty liver. When researchers excluded them, a healthy ALT came back closer to 19 U/L for women and 30 U/L for men. A result of 32 can be normal on the printout and still worth watching.

Does this diagnose fatty liver?

No. Fatty liver is confirmed on imaging, and it can hide behind a normal ALT. What these seven markers give you is a flag and a baseline — enough to know whether to look further, and enough to measure change against.

How fast do the numbers actually move?

Faster than most people expect. GGT has a half-life of roughly two to three weeks and often shifts visibly within a month. Fatty liver itself commonly improves over three to six months, which is why ninety days is the sweet spot for a retest.

Do I need to stop drinking before I test?

No. Test where you actually are — that number is the one worth watching fall. If you drink heavily every day, speak to a doctor before stopping abruptly; alcohol withdrawal can be medically dangerous.

Who sees my results?

You do. You choose whether to share them with a clinician through the platform, and you can revoke that access at any time.
